In order to verify the veteran’s dates of service, the VA will require a copy of the veteran’s service record.  These documents are sometimes referred to as a separation/discharge summary or DD-214’s.  These documents must be included in your claim application.  This is a one page document and not a certificate.  It will outline the date the veteran entered active military service and the date the veteran was discharged.

Do whatever you can to locate this document.  If you can’t find it, you can order it by clicking on the “Order Records” icon below.  Ordering the records from the VA is free; however, it can take 4-8 weeks to honor your request.  Therefore, we highly encourage you to complete the application and send it in while you await your records.  In no way will this negatively impact the VA’s decision.
