1. The VA will require an original or certified copy of the veteran’s military records, specifically his/her discharge papers, also known as DD-214’s or separation papers, as proof of the veteran’s service record. These documents must be included in the VA claim application.
2. Once in hand, include the military records/discharge papers, with the application. The VA is very good about returning originals, but keep copies.
3. If you are unable to locate the veteran’s military discharge papers, you can order them by clicking the button below. Complete the form and mail your request to the St. Louis office listed on the 2nd page of the application. Be aware that it could take 2 -3 months to receive your documents.
